Comfort for the Ukipically afflicted.

I HAVE BEEN moved almost to tears by the pain and hysteria expressed by so many decent people at the success of Ukip in the recent elections.

Reading your tweets and comments, there were times I expected to see a column of Faragistas in green wellies, wax jackets and cravats goosestepping up our high street, singing “Rule Britannia” over and over again before adjourning to the pub for a couple of pints then scouring the village and adjacent fields for Romanians and Poles to bundle into waiting Range Rovers for instant deportation.

Your pain is distressing, but assuagable.

As so many of you have helpfully pointed out numerous times, Ukip’s share of the vote went down since the last elections. They don’t control any local councils and they have no MPs. They may, if they are very lucky, get their first MP next year, but that’s a long shot. They are a political party with less clout than the Greens, who at least have an MP and run one local council (Brighton – which they do badly, it has to be admitted).

As for the European elections, turnout in general was low, so Ukip are hardly representative of the electorate in general. The European Union may be a fantastic thing but its parliament, as you know, is small beer. All the real stuff goes in in the Commission, which is unelected, so you don’t have to worry yourselves about that.

Ukip are therefore not in the position to change any policy at any level. They’re not going to be able to ban paid maternity leave, legalise rape, tax the workers into poverty, cancel your holidays, stop all house building, buy aircraft carriers instead of building schools, keep every single damn foreigner from entering Britain, or deprive you of your human rights.

Hardly the stuff of nazi nightmares.

Come the general election many people will return to their usual party. That’s because voting for Ukip was just a protest vote, as everyone from every other party keeps telling us. Ukip may have drained away some Labour support, but it is still mainly the Tories who have suffered – and are most likely to suffer in future. That’s good news for Labour. It may even be good news for the LibDems, but nobody cares about them.

AS FOR THE people who vote Ukip — what kind of monsters are they?

Kippers are stuck in the past and don’t want change, especially change thrust upon them by bureaucrats and Eurocrats who haven’t asked for their consent. That kind of attitude is highly undesirable in our fast-changing, modern world. Change is what the kippers will get, whether they want it or not.

Lots of Ukip voters are old and thus have out-of-date views (racism, homophobia, sexism, xenophobia, patriotism, etc). They just don’t count any more, especially if they’re white. They’ll also be dead soon, or will be so senile they won’t be able to vote. They’re a dying breed.

Ukip supporters are thick. That’s a fact. Not just your middle class country types but also the white working class, who are gullible as well, and a bunch of pitbull-owning fascists. That’s why London resisted them, because the capital is full of smart, young graduate types, foreigners and immigrants, who again, by definition, can’t be racists or xenophobes. More graduates, immigrants and foreigners everywhere will put paid them. Be thankful to the EU that those borders will stay wide open.

Kippers are angry, and therefore irrational and wrong. Treating them seriously is like feeding the trolls on the internet. You shouldn’t do it. Weeks of concerted cross-party media attacks on them as racists, loons and homophobes didn’t work. Let them rage and rave and before long they’ll disappear up their own fundaments.

That may happen sooner than you think. Ukip is a one-man band. It’s the Farage Party. Given how much he drinks and smokes he could keel over at any moment and there’d be no one to fill his shoes. The party would disintegrate. Your best bet is to encourage him in his bad habits. Stop shouting “racist!” at him and buy the man a drink.

It could be as easy as that.

Michael Blackburn.
