Event: ‘Does prison work?’ Editor’s Choice debate in London.

Wilton's.

DOES PRISON WORK comes off a bit better as a question than as a placard held by a man on the street. The answer to the question, which is older than Bentham, but like Bentham still nicely preserved, will be debated at Wilton’s on Tuesday evening 8 February 2011, at 7pm.

From The Times‘ own release:

Times+, the membership club for subscribers of The Times and The Sunday Times, has formed a partnership with Wilton’s, the world’s oldest music hall, to present regular evenings of debate, discussion, comedy and live performance.

Every month, Times+ Live at Wilton’s will host an Editor’s Choice debate evening, tackling topical issues on everything from education, to law and order, to business. The debates will be chaired by the Editor, James Harding, or another of the Times’ senior journalists, and will include a panel discussion and Q&A from the audience of Times readers.

The first debate of 2011 will be entitled ‘Does Prison Work?’ and will take place at Wilton’s on Tuesday February 8 at 7pm, where Times Executive Editor Daniel Finkelstein will be joined by former Cabinet minister and former prisoner Jonathan Aitken; Nick Hardwick, Chief Inspector of Prisons; Nick Herbert, Minister of State for Policing and Criminal Justice; and Theodore Dalrymple, writer and retired prison doctor, who will debate controversial law and order questions.

Wilton’s is in Grace’s Alley, London E1. Tickets are £15 (less £5 for Times+ members).
