· Event: ‘Who and what are universities for?’ NYU Friday from 11:30 am.

THE NEW YORK REVIEW of Books and NYU’s Humanities Initiative are sponsoring a free “half-day” conference on higher education starting at 11:30 am Friday, 29 April 2011. The event will be held at NYU’s Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute, 20 Cooper Square, 7th Floor, in New York City. The conference is free and a reception will be held at the conclusion. The scheduled panels:

11:30am PANEL I; ACADEMIC LABOR AS A FACTOR OF PRODUCTION?
Participants: Simon Head (NYU and Oxford), Ellen Schrecker (Yeshiva), Andrew Hacker, (Queens College).
Moderated by Bill Bradley

1-2pm Lunch

2-3:30pm PANEL II: WHAT ARE UNIVERSITIES FOR?
Participants: Andrew Delbanco (Columbia), Jane Tylus (NYU), Anthony Grafton (Princeton)
Moderated by Robert Silvers

3:30-4:00pm Coffee Break

4-5:30pm PANEL III: WHO ARE UNIVERSITIES FOR ?
Participants: Peter Brooks (Princeton), Nicholas Lemann (Columbia), Diane Ravitch (NYU)
Moderated by Alan Ryan

Oddly, the sponsors say “the event is open to the public with a photo ID.” Our money says the 2pm session will be the best bet.
