IT HOLDS A clear reference to the “sword in the stone” legend of Camelot: the copper basket normally resides in its female “cradle” – Mother Earth – a permanently-affixed larger cone hovering in an asymmetric white Carrera marble base.
In Arthurian romance, King Arthur obtained the throne by pulling the mystic sword from an unyielding magical stone. In this metaphoric object by the American conceptual word artist Lawrence Weiner, the act of creation cannot be performed except by “a true king or queen,” each of whom possesses the divine gift of being able to attain poetic beauty – but who ultimately realizes that they must begin with uninspired, prosaic attempts or even failures.
